【Match report】 KAWASAKI FRONTALE vs Yokohama F Marinos
1. First half Review
It was very lucky for YOKOHAMA only 2-0 down
“It wasn’t a good game for us, we didn’t play well.”, “we got dominated, it was lucky to 2-0 down”, “We were terrible at 1st half.” After the game, Potecoglou was apparently upset and his comments described everything on this game. Their quality didn’t deserve to stay J1. Considering they were the champion 2 years ago, they could do more. They often failed to deliver the ball to attacking area from center-back and wing-back players. Even if I consider KAWASAKI gave them pressure to those players, I should say that their quality was not good enough against J1 clubs. And also they need more communication. Because where attacking players wanted to receive the ball was different from where defenders delivered the ball.
I don’t believe that YOKOHAMA prepared well for this game. KIDA and Marcos were absent. And OGIHARA and AMANO didn’t work out as their Substitute players. In addition a new player IWATA seemed to struggle to communicate with other players in defending situation. Transition was very slow and they didn’t show enough intensity.
Ryonosuke KABAYAMA showed fans a lot of his potential
Ryonosuke KABAYAMA was an only good point for YOKOHAMA side. It didn’t look like his first game. He stayed very calm against the champion club. He proved that his strong points were enough for playing J1 league. 18 years old golden boy showed skillful dribble and YAMANE selected as BEST 11 last season struggled to stop him. He performed well as an individual player but as one of the team, he didn’t work out for both attacking and defending situation, so he was out after 1st half 45 minutes. It’ll be his big task to be a starting player.
But it was enough to prove his potential.
KAWASAKI dominated YOKOHAMA first 45 minutes
KAWASAKI proved that they would show us attractive attacking football again. Both two goals were beautiful and process on those goals were also beautiful. Two players always stay close to the player who has the ball to secure the pass course. And all players can deliver the ball with skillful dribble, so they always have more than 3 options. That makes defenders confused.
J.LEAGUE 2021 SEASON PREVIEW 【KAWASAKI FRONTALE】 | Japan Teams
the Most Valuable Player in the 1st half : Damião
The most impressed player in the 1st half was definitely Leandro Damião. He didn’t score the goal but created many chances. Goals for KAWASAKI came from those chances. He always chased the ball when YOKOHAMA defenders had the ball. This former Brazil national team player made team’s intensity higher.

2. Second half Review
Postecoglou Rebuilt the team at half-time
After half-time, YOKOHAMA sent 2 substitute players to the pitch. One of them Daizen MAEDA changed the game. Especially his speed gave KAWASAKI defenders threat on both defending and attacking situation. His speed was absolutely faster than others. That speed made KAWASAKI defenders get panic and mistake. His speed also made those players stay back, then YOKOHAMA kept possession easier in the 2nd half than 1st half. Some people maybe thought that KAWASAKI parked the bus front of the goal because they already scored two goals. But I think that they wanted to score another goal, considering ONIKI coach’s comment after the game, “we needed 3 goals”. MAEDA made KAWASAKI who wanted to attack keep front of their goal. If YOKOHAMA played well at 1st half like 2nd half, the game would have been more exciting.
KAWASAKI showed us how champion should play
KAWASAKI needed to spend more defending time on their side in the 2nd half. The game changed but KAWASAKI wasn’t frustrated at all. They sometimes showed sharp counter-attacking. And they never let YOKOHAMA score the goal anyway even though YOKOHAMA had some chances. That made KAWASAKI the champion last year.
Kento TACHIBANADA will be the key player this season
Kento TACHIBANADA made J1 league debut against YOKOHAMA. He showed us his strong points on defending situation. YOKOHAMA missed several chances because of his defense. He showed his potential to be the starting player.
the Most Valuable Player in the 2nd half : Daizen MAEDA
Daizen MAEDA was the best player in the 2nd half. He definitely changed the team to the good way. His speed made KAWASAKI struggle to keep the possession. He could be the starting player next game. KABAYAMA played well but MAEDA’s performance was better than KABAYAMA’s performance. They will compete the position each other this season.
3. Overview
Match data Full Time
YOKOHAMA STILL HAS A CHANCE AND TIME
YOKOHAMA failed to start the season from the very beginning while KAWASAKI played well. Both clubs didn’t have NO.10 players (Marcos YOKOHAMA side, OSHIMA KAWASAKI side). The difference between KAWASAKI and YOKOHAMA was preparation in the training season. But this year there are more matches than usual, it means YOKOHAMA has more time to fix their problems. If YOKOHAMA plays that way of 2nd half, they still have possibility to get the title.
the Most Valuable Player in the game Leandro Damião
