What is the World Wide Web?

• The World Wide Web is known as the Web.
• WWW is the abbreviation for World Wide Web.
• The World Wide Web is not synonymous with the Internet.
• The World Wide Web is the Information system to find documents over the Internet.

Most people think that the World Wide Web is the Internet. It’s not correct, but almost correct. Let’s see what is the World Wide Web. In this article, I call the World Wide Web www.

1. The world Wide Web(www) is different from Internet

People think that www is the internet, and even some IT engineers can’t explain what is difference. If you read this article to know www, then please go to the next topic. But if you are studying IT and you don’t know this difference, then maybe you better know this.

OSI model

There is the layer model called the “OSI(Open Systems Interconnection) model” in the IT world. This model defines seven layers.

In the IT industry, people often use this model. But this article is for beginners, so I make this easier. Internet is infrastructure for IT services and the www is one of IT services.

Internet is the protocol(rules) to deliver IT services and WWW is one of those services.

2. The World Wide Web(www)

Three basic standards

There are many web standards. But the main standards you better remember are following three standards.

• URL

• HTML

I will explain the details of those words in my other articles. So I talk about them roughly in this article.

Client-Server model

When you want to browse Information, web servers provide information. In this case, there are two players, clients and servers. We call this model the “Client-Server model”.

HyperText and HyperLink

When clients want to view web pages, they request content that includes HyperText and Hypermedia. At the start of web services, only HyperText was exchanged between clients and web servers. They can’t exchange videos or music at that moment. But it was very convenient for people even if they could send an only text. Because they used the mail before they started this service.

And HTML is the rule of this HyperText. This HTML is very simple, then this technology was spread all over the world quickly.

One of them thought that he wanted to share content provided by other web servers. Then he started using the links in his content.

Those links are HyperLinks.

Then this hyperLink made the connection between clients and web servers looks like WEB(a spider’s net) though those cables are not connected like WEB actually.

So this HTML service is connected worldwide and it looks like a web, that’s why people named this service World Wide Web(WWW).
